The AAVE Group in collaboration with The Aids Pastoral Ministry of the Archdiocese of Goiânia, commemorated the 35th International Aids Candlelight Memorial on May 21, 2017
The Candlelight Memorial, organized by the Global Network of People living with HIV/AIDS, (GNP+) is an international event, which takes place in over 100 countries around the world. The objective of the event is threefold: 1. Remember those who have died as a consequence of AIDS; 2. Support those who are living with HIV and 3. Alert all regarding the need for care and prevention.
This year here in Goiânia, we held the Candlelight Memorial in nine parishes during Mass or a Celebration of the Word. As the parishioners entered the church, we presented each one with a pamphlet, to which AAVE´s service users had tied a small candle with a red ribbon. The pamphlet contained information regarding HIV and AIDS with a focus on this year’s theme “ENDING AIDS TOGETHER: Reduce Stigma, Ensure Access, Increase Resources, Promote Involvement”. It also contained the Aids Pastoral Prayer. During the celebration, we lit the candles and prayed the prayer, which the celebrant led. We were very encouraged and gratified as we witnessed the encouraging words of the celebrants regarding the importance of supporting the work of the AAVE Group and Aids Pastoral Ministry. Most of them spoke too of our call as followers of Christ, not to judge or condemn those infected by the Aids virus. Participants were encouraged to become involved in AAVEs and the Aids Pastoral Ministry´s mission.
