Irish Missionary Sr. Margaret Hosty Honored with Human Rights Award in Brazil

In a significant recognition of contribution to human rights, Sr. Margaret Hosty, an Irish missionary from County Roscommon, has been awarded the Human Rights Award by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goiás in Brazil.

Sr. Margaret, a dedicated member of the Sisters of Saint Louis since 1985, has been relentlessly working towards the betterment of individuals living with HIV and AIDS.

From Personal Loss to Public Service

Sr. Margaret’s journey towards advocacy and support for those affected by HIV/AIDS began in 1993. The painful experience of witnessing the discrimination faced by a friend and colleague who succumbed to AIDS complications propelled her into action. This led to the establishment of the AAVE Group in 1995, an acronym for AIDS, Assistance, Life, Hope (AIDS, Apoio, Vida, Esperança in Portuguese).

AAVE Group: A Beacon of Hope

The AAVE Group provides a range of services to those affected by HIV/AIDS, including psychological support, counselling, home and hospital care visits, advice on rights and entitlements, and skills training. The goal is to empower individuals to become financially self-sufficient. Additionally, the AAVE Group has also taken up educational initiatives to combat the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

Funding and Support

Funded entirely through donations and grants, the AAVE Group receives significant support from Misean Cara. This organization aids Irish missionary groups overseas through the Irish Aid Programme. However, Sr. Margaret emphasizes the persistent need for information and awareness to combat the prejudice and exclusion faced by those living with HIV, despite the availability of effective treatments.

In her acceptance speech, Sr. Margaret reiterated the importance of the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. She called for continued support and understanding for those living with the condition, highlighting the vital role of education in eradicating the stigma associated with the disease.
